· Giewont
It took its name after well known peak in spectacular Tatry Mountains located in the southern part of Poland, on the border with Slovakia. Tatry Mountains and surrounding Podhale is a home to Gorale “Polish Highlanders”. It is a beautiful region but a hard land to live. In the past Gorale have made their living by herding sheep and farming. And a lot of our culture is associated with herding. Our costumes especially men's pants, capes, hat, woman's tasseled scarves are made of wool. Winter coats are made of sheep skin. The hatchet was used as a hiking stick, herding tool, and ax during the pasturage in the mountains. Our singing is loud so it could have been heard on far away mountain. That colorful culture is deeply rooted in the hearts of Polish Highlanders. That’s how some of the highlander immigrants brought it over here and share it with their children born in the United States forming together the "Giewont" group.
